tipsHealthyLawnSm02Watering Schedule- So you’ve hit the reset button on your lawn and have fresh, green sod laid. Here is how to care for your new sod and get you to a lush, green lawn you’ve been looking for.

tipsSodSm01For the first 7 days, water the new sod every morning for 30 minutes. A deep watering helps the roots thrust deep into the soil. New sod should be kept damp, but not overly saturated until it has taken root. Always water your grass early in the morning; never after 4pm.
tipsSodSm02From 7 to 14 days, water for 30 minutes every other day. The new grass should start taking root around 14 days. To determine if your new sod has taken root, gently lift a corner of the sod. If it resists lifting, is has established its roots.

tipsSodSm04When the new sod has taken root, around 3 -4 weeks, you can reduce the frequency of watering 2 – 3x per week for 20 – 30 minutes per zone.

tipsHealthyLawnSm01Mowing the Grass- Wait to cut your new grass for at least 3-4 weeks until the sod has taken root. For the first cut, the mower should be set on the highest setting.  After the first cut, gradually lower the setting each time you mow until you reach the optimal height of 2 ½” – 3” high. Be sure to turn slowly and gradually the first few times you cut the grass.

tipsSodSm04Fungus Prevention -  After the 3rd week, it is recommended to start a fungicide treatment because of all the watering done in the first month to establish the new sod. A fungicide treatment should be applied once every two weeks for at least the first month. After the first month it should be done once a month for the next 2 – 3 months.

tipsHealthyLawnSm05Fertilizing From 60 to 90 days after installation, you may fertilize the new lawn. Before you do, you should first check for fungus before applying any fertilizer. If the lawn does not show any signs of fungus, proceed with fertilizer. If you fertilize a lawn that has fungus on it, you may not be able to get rid of the fungus and risk killing the new grass.

tipsHealthyLawnSm04Weed Control- Wait to use weed killer on new sod until at least 4 months after installation.
